How to choose the right skip bin size for your job – Southern Highlands
Picking the wrong skip bin size is one of the most common mistakes people make when hiring a bin. Too small and you’re paying for a second bin or cramming waste in above the rim. Too large and you’ve spent more than you needed to.
This guide walks through the most common job types across the Southern Highlands — from bathroom renovations in Bowral to farm shed clear-outs near Goulburn — and matches each one to the bin size most likely to suit. When in doubt, call us on 0417 468 220.
Quick reference guide
| Job type | Recommended bin size |
| Single room cleanout, small bathroom reno | 2m³ or 2.5m³ |
| Kitchen reno, medium bathroom, garage clear-out | 4m³ |
| Whole house reno or significant garden clear-out | 6m³ or 8m³ |
| Large renovation, deceased estate, multiple rooms | 10m³ or 15m³ |
| Demolition, commercial clear-out, farm shed | 23m³ or 30m³ |
| Concrete, bricks, soil only | 2m³ or 4m³ heavy waste |
Small jobs: single room clear-outs and minor renovations
A 2m³ or 2.5m³ bin suits jobs where the volume of waste is limited — a bathroom strip-out, a single bedroom cleanout, a small amount of garden pruning, or clearing a garden shed. These bins sit comfortably in most driveways. A 2m³ bin holds roughly four standard trailer loads of general waste. If your job is producing more than that, size up.
Medium jobs: kitchens, garages and whole-room renovations
A 4m³ bin is the most versatile size for mid-sized residential work. It handles a full kitchen renovation — cabinetry, flooring, appliances, plasterboard — and suits a garage or workshop clear-out. For homes in Mittagong or Bowral with older-style federation layouts, a 4m³ bin is a reliable choice for single-room renovations where materials are bulkier than expected.
Large residential jobs: whole house renovations
A full house renovation typically generates far more waste than homeowners anticipate. A 6m³ or 8m³ bin is the right starting point, with the larger size making more sense when there’s significant timber, plasterboard or old flooring involved. For major renovations across multiple areas, many customers find it more cost-effective to hire a 10m³ bin for the project duration rather than hiring a smaller bin multiple times.
Deceased estates and whole-property clear-outs
Deceased estates are among the most volume-intensive jobs we see. For most Southern Highlands homes, a 10m³ bin is the minimum we’d recommend for a whole-property clear-out. Rural properties near Goulburn, Kangaroo Valley or Picton with sheds and outbuildings often need a 15m³ or larger.
Farm sheds, demolitions and commercial work
For significant demolitions, commercial premises, or agricultural clear-outs, the 23m³ and 30m³ bins handle volume at scale. For rural properties across the Goulburn district or Southern Highlands, this is often the most efficient way to manage a farm shed demolition without multiple bin swaps.
Heavy waste: concrete, bricks and soil
Concrete, bricks, tiles and soil are considerably denser than general renovation waste and will hit weight limits before the bin looks full. For heavy waste, we recommend a 2m³ or 4m³ heavy waste bin rather than mixing heavy materials into a general skip.
