What can and can’t go in a skip bin – Southern Highlands guide

It’s one of the most common questions we get at Fast Skips. Whether you’re booking a bin for a home renovation in Bowral, clearing out a farm shed near Goulburn, or managing a deceased estate in Kangaroo Valley, knowing what you can and can’t put in a skip bin saves time and avoids unexpected fees.

This guide covers the rules for standard skip bin hire across the Southern Highlands. If you have a question about a specific item, call us on 0417 468 220 before you load.

What can go in a skip bin?

Most general household and renovation waste is accepted in a standard skip bin. This includes:

If you’re unsure whether something fits into a standard bin, the safest approach is to call us first. Some materials are accepted but need to be kept separate or placed in a specific bin type.

What can’t go in a skip bin?

Certain materials are prohibited from skip bins under NSW EPA regulations and our operating conditions.

Asbestos and asbestos-containing materials — Asbestos cannot go in a standard skip bin under any circumstances. It must be double-bagged, labelled and handled by a licensed removalist. Fast Skips is fully licensed for asbestos removal across Bowral, Mittagong, Goulburn, Picton and Kangaroo Valley. Call us and we’ll manage it correctly from start to finish.

Liquid waste — Paints, oils, chemicals, solvents and fuel must not go in a skip bin. Most councils run periodic household chemical collections.

Tyres — Tyres are a controlled waste product and require separate disposal through a tyre retailer or licensed facility.

Gas bottles and cylinders — Must be taken to a licensed facility or returned to the supplier.

E-waste — Computers, monitors, televisions and other electronic equipment cannot go in a skip bin. Many councils offer free e-waste drop-off.

Fridges and freezers with refrigerant intact — Refrigerant must be extracted by a licensed technician before disposal.

Batteries — Particularly lithium batteries, which are a fire risk in enclosed waste.

Can I mix different types of waste in one bin?

For most general renovation and household clear-out jobs, mixing is fine — timber, carpet, garden waste and general rubbish can all go in together. The main exception is heavy waste. Concrete, bricks and soil mixed into a general bin can result in a bin that’s overweight and can’t be safely transported. If your job involves significant heavy materials, we’ll recommend a dedicated 2m³ or 4m³ heavy waste bin.

Can green waste go in a skip bin?

Yes. Green waste — branches, lawn clippings, garden prunings and shrubs — is accepted in standard skip bins. For jobs that are predominantly a garden clean-up or tree removal, let us know and we’ll recommend the right bin size and type.

What happens to the waste after it’s collected?

Fast Skips sorts and processes waste responsibly. Where possible, materials are diverted from landfill — metals are recovered for recycling, green waste goes to composting, and usable materials are processed through licensed facilities. It’s a more responsible outcome than multiple tip runs, and it’s built into every skip bin hire across the Southern Highlands.
